Brief Description of McQuade's Programs

McQuade Children's Services operates a variety of programs within a range from community-based preventive services to 24-hour out of home treatment. Each program emphasizes responding to the needs of children who have experienced emotional trauma as evidenced by behavioral disorders, need for Special Education, and history of abuse or neglect. The continuum of services has evolved in response to the changing needs of children and families. More than 90% of youth in treatment each year are served through community-based programs. Below is a description of the current services available.

The Kaplan School for Special Education - More than 155 students served in each year

Our Kaplan School in New Windsor accepts day and residential male students. Year round Special Education classes feature a core academic curriculum, computer-assisted instruction, a school-to-work initiative, music, art, physical education, and education is further enhanced by therapeutic activities including individual and family therapy.

Therapeutic Residential Treatment - More than 80 children served in each year

Boys undergoing severe emotional and behavioral difficulties at home, in school, or in their community can be referred to live in our New Windsor campus residential program. These children receive 24 hour treatment, counseling, and supervision. Each of the boys attends the Kaplan School for Special Education in addition to the intensive individual, group and family therapy. Community volunteers, participation in sports leagues, cultural, religious, and recreational activities, as well as development of vocational skills are integral components of each child's treatment plan. All have a goal of successfully returning home to their families, friends and schools.

Community Based Preventive Services - More than 2,200 children served in each year

McQuade offers 4 preventive programs across Orange County . Each of these programs is designed to support youth and families by enhancing their abilities to care for themselves. The Independent Living program teaches foster children how to be self-sufficient. The Family Preservation program provides counseling for at-risk parents to help them create safe, nurturing homes. The Placement Diversion counselors work to re-focus troubled youth who live at home and have been identified as being at risk. PINS Plus is an enhanced placement diversion program for older teens: age 16-18.

Emergency Diagnostic Assessment Centers - More than 125 children served in each year

Open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, the Newburgh and Middletown shelters provide children with professional diagnostic and crisis care, including short-term Special Education. A comprehensive psychological, psychiatric, educational and behavioral assessment and recommendation is completed for each child. These programs seek to diagnose the needs for families in order to provide the optimum treatment plan recommendations for each child.

Community Based Therapeutic Group Homes - More than 30 children served in each year

Teens without viable family resources can live in our Cornwall (girls) or Washingtonville (boys) group homes, receive therapy, and gain independent living skills until they graduate from public high school. All residents are encouraged to become involved with after-school, faith-based and community activities. Opportunities for vocational apprenticeships and part-time jobs are emphasized by McQuade, as is the importance of learning independent living skills. College scholarships are also available to qualified residents. Group Home residents usually live at the group home for an average of 22 months. In recent years, youth in our Group Homes have made the Honor Roll, attended the prom, participated in sports teams and ROTC, graduated from High School and gone on to College.

McQuade's Philosophy
McQuade's staff and volunteers are not daunted by the special needs of the children we serve, but rather believe that by changing attitudes, we can change lives. McQuade's programs focus on providing children with a reliable, safe environment helping them to build trust and healthy relationships and by giving them successful experiences to build their self-esteem.

We believe a quality program treats not only the crisis at hand, but also prepares the child for how to be successful and confident in the face of future challenges. We believe each child has the potential to become a productive and contributing member of society. We endeavor to provide the children in our care with the highest quality treatment, counseling and training, to teach basic values, personal development and good citizenship, and to create an environment that embodies caring, opportunity and success. Our core values include commitment to excellence, dedication to quality and the effective use of resources. We also believe it is important that all children who are admitted to McQuade are able to obtain services and/or treatment without encountering discrimination, insensitivity to cultural differences, or any other barriers to receiving treatment.
